Toronto FC - Kicking and Screaming

Updated: Nov 11, 2023

First of all, lets add some much-needed context. ‘Kicking and Screaming’ (2005) is a comedy centered around Will Ferrell becoming a first-time youth soccer coach. I won’t bore you with the details (however if you’re looking for laughs, and a guide on how not to coach soccer… It’s a must see!) but there is one punchline that persists through the entire film. “pass the ball to the Italians” a sentiment that takes Ferrell's squad from bottom of the league to champions. Now, you’re probably thinking what the f*ck does that have with Toronto FC?

Well, I firmly believe TFC’s sporting director and head coach, Bob Bradley saw the movie as a biopic on one of the greatest sporting teams of all time. Because in the last year TFC have signed Criscito, Bernadeschi, and Insigne, all of whom have been capped by the Italian national team. So, making your teams game plan “pass the ball to the Italians” can’t really result in success, can it? Surprisingly yes, yes it can!

At the time of writing, TFC have gone unbeaten in 5 league games. With the Italian’s contributing 9 goals/assists between them. Swiftly turning them from a punching bag around the bottom of the table, to division heavyweights making a playoff charge. This new look team are capable of much more than just making up the numbers. Keep your eye on TFC, because there is no doubt in my mind they will be kicking and screaming their way through the playoffs.

So, moral of the story… Believe everything you see in the movies. Always.
